Lekanis

Ceramic clay. Red-figure lekanis with a cover, Kerch style type C. The low bowl sits on a small rounded foot and has two horizontal strap handles; the large discoid handle on the lid allows it to be used separately as a footed cup. Decorative horizontal band of large bay leaves on the body of the bowl. The main part of the lid intended for decoration was filled with a circular composition of a profile of the head of an Oriental woman dressed in a turban, two lying griffins with raised front left paws and massive wings, and tendriled spirals, a palmette, and circle. Egg-and-dart decorates the sides of the lid. A rosette and circle in the centre of the handle.
